The Chicken School is a kinder garden which receives 96 Burmese children everyday. Throughout the day, the children are cared for by local staff. The Colabora Birmania covers all of the maintenance costs of the nursery and provides nutritional meals for the children.

When we first visited this school, there was only one teacher taking care of 55 Burmese boys and girls. They were all crowded together in a wooden house with only one room, where they played, studied and napped until their parents picked them up in the afternoon. When we met their families and visited their homes, we discovered that they were poverty-stricken and realised that the children ate for the first time in the evening, when their parents came home from work. Most of the parents work the land, earning only 2€ per day. With this money they buy just enough food for their families to eat that day, a handful of rice, one egg, some vegetables and 3 spoonfuls of oil.

In March 2010, thanks to our members’ contributions, we hired a bigger house, two more teachers and a cook. We divided the children into age groups to begin lessons and gave them lunch each day at the nursery.

In less than 2 years, the quality of life for these children has improved remarkably. As well as having their basic needs covered, they also have a suitable premise and qualified teachers who teach them new things each day through games. In addition, Burma Collaboration’s staff organise communal meetings with their families to support them in starting up projects that increase their incomes.
