The “42KM” school was built by the Colabora Birmania. 400 hundred Burmese children study at the school. Along with another local organization, we cover all of the school fees and offer a daily meal to all students. This means we can prevent the children having to work to earn their own livelihood.

The 42km school provides education for 400 Burmese boys and girls who are refugees. It is located 42 kilometers south of Mae Sot, on the border between Thailand and Burma. These students arrived in Thailand with their families to escape the poverty and oppression of their government and with the hope of improving their life by settling in Mae Sot. The students’ families principally survive on the work that they do in the fields, working 10 hours a day and earning less than 2€ per day. With these salaries they can barely support their children, which is why Colabora Birmania covers all school fees. We also offer a nutritious meal for all of the students and teachers.

In many instances, children are forced to leave school around the age of eight to work alongside their parents and earn a living. There are an estimated 20,000 Burmese children in the Mae Sot area and only 9,000 are provided with schooling.

The school has been in operation since 2007. In 2010, in an effort to offer education to more children, the Colabora Birmania built four new classrooms, one nursery, three bedrooms, six new bathrooms (4 toilets and 2 bathrooms with shower), as well as a kitchen that provides 420 meals a day. Together with the organization “Help Without Frontiers” (HWF), we cover all of the maintenance costs of the school.

The bedrooms enable 45 children, who are either orphans or live far away and cannot afford daily transport costs, to attend the school. The Colabora Birmania, together with HWF, finances all of the costs of the students’ schooling, complete maintenance of the school, as well as food for 400 children.
